In 2014, then-president Barack Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which aimed to increase funding and coordination for workforce development programs in the United States. One of the key areas targeted by the bill was continuing education and upskilling for adult workers. Programs and initiatives that offer these sorts of programs deal in middle skills.

The National Association of Manufacturers has promised to help train nearly 2 million workers over the next five years to address a worker shortage. Part of the problem is record low unemployment. Another part is the lack of workers properly trained for the job openings.

Its mission is to partner with area businesses and organizations to make sure people are employed, and that includes Ohio’s teenagers. The Workforce Development Board of Central Ohio says it encourages teens to look at getting work early on. President and CEO Lisa Patt-McDaniel says some employers might be wary to hire young adults, but businesses could be pleasantly surprised by their work ethic. Grants and Programs Manager Lawrence Jackson says teenagers sometimes need motivation to take the extra step towards building a career.

Participants will be able to engage with professionals in a “one-stop” virtual location to find help on a variety of pressing issues, including food access, legal aid, rent stabilization funds, childcare, job help, and more.

The virtual event is presented in partnership with OhioMeansJobs, Workforce Development Board of Central Ohio, Human Service Chamber of Franklin County and United Way of Central Ohio.
